Lady (alt. Ledy) Fre Bagg (née Randall) is an Imperial noble woman who is a cousin of Princess Pina co Lada and in line for the throne. She later becomes Harlam of Atlantia Uruth. She is a minor antagonist in the Gate Gaiden and a major antagonist in Gate Season 2.
Appearance
Lady appears in the LNs as a young woman with long Yellow-orange hair and yellow eyes. She typically wears outfits that are a plum-purple with white highlights.
It is claimed that after she lost her mansion Lady had a mental breakdown and her hair turned silver-white, but this is never reflected in the character art.
Personality
Background
Supposedly born Lady Fre Randall to the Imperial Chancellor Duke Prended Sol Randall, Lady grew up in noble society and quickly distinguished herself as an absolute brat. Her father hired tutors for her in socializing, art, and etiquette, but instead of taking her studies seriously, Lady instead became excellent at figuring out how to bribe and blackmail her instructors into giving her high marks. When asked why she wouldn't take her lessons seriously, she claimed that manipulation was far more interesting. Through this, Lady was able to force her opinions on many others and became the dominant trend-setter and social mover in the Empire. However, the rise of Zorzal, the resulting purges, and the Imperial Civil War ending in victory by Pina co Lada completely upended whatever influence Lady thought she had. Furthermore, the one she had secret love for was an Oprichina who was forced to turn to banditry after the conflict ended. By the time of the Gaiden, she is trying to gather what little social capital she still has insulting Bozes Co Palesti over the fact that she had a child out of wedlock with Tomita, an enemy soldier.
Unknown to Lady at the time, she is adopted. She is actually the daughter of Kati Sol Caesar and his concubine Coo, daughter of Corona. Kati was the son of the prior Emperor Grahn, who died young and was adopted by Molt Sol Augustus who was given a legal mandated to give him the throne when he came of age. Instead, Molt had Kati killed and claimed the throne for himself, originally intending to pass it to Zorzal and later Pina. Lady was taken in secret to the house of Prended Sol Randall and raised by the family of her grandmother.
Plot
Gate Gaiden
She has deep grudge for Bozes Co Palesti family. This is because Bozes got married to one of Itami subordinates (to her eyes an enemy) and had a child before her while her lover was killed fighting against the JSDF. In Gaiden 4 she learns that she is the daughter of Prince Kati, the original intended heir to the Imperial throne before he was murdered by Molt Sol Augusts, meaning that she is technically the rightful heir to the Empire, rather than Molt or Pina. After losing her family, estate, and boyfriend, she decides to make a bid for the throne. This manifests in a major sabotage operation to delay the construction of the Gate and then destroy it before its completion. The operation included everything from the overthrow and temporary capture of Italica, the hostage-taking of dwarves to blackmail stonemasons, the questionable imprisonment of Arpeggio, message interdiction in Pina's office to prevent her from knowing, influence operations in the Senate and Alnus Cooperative, hiring Mabel Forn to destroy the connection anchor to Earth, and culminating in the direct sabotage and collapse of the Gate structure in a combined attempt to humiliate Japan and kill Lelei. After her scheme to sabotage the Gate failed (the JSDF was able to build a replacement Gate out of snow at no additional cost), she was exiled by Molt to marry the leader of Atlantia.
Gate Season 2
Main Article: Avion Sea Piracy Conflict
After the events of the Gaiden, Lady is exiled to Atlantia Uruth where she marries the Harlam (king of the Uruth) and has a son. It is unclear if the son was actually conceived by the original Harlam, but it is highly likely that he was the result of an affair with someone like Vesper kina Lire. It is during this time that she makes contact with a Chinese agent and makes plans to assume control over the Avion and Kundoran Seas. The first step of this is to kill the existing Harl of Atlantia, allowing her to become Harlam since she is the mother of the only clear heir. It is assumed that this was done by poison over a long period of time, as there was no evidence left behind to tie her to the death.
Th next step is that she links the agent to the Caucacus Guild for the sake of creating magic-powered cannons, inspired by the ones she herself viewed at Alnus under JSDF control. She then works through a set of Royal Revanchists (like Shamrock Ha Elixir) attempting to restore the Avion Kingdom to get these cannons and stolen designs into the hands of the Seven Pirate Chiefs, the idea being that they would open up an opportunity to kidnap Primera Luna Avion, the only remaining heir to the Avion Kingdom, and forcibly marry her to her son, thereby gaining her control over the former Avion Kingdom territories as well.
This plan is thrown into chaos by the appearance of the JMSDF in the Avion Sea, along with increased collected evidence tying the cannons to Atlantia. Lady is able to easily deflect most accusations and bogs the Avion Sea heads of state down in meetings while working to conscript the pirates she has already armed and increase their numbers. When Primera discovers Lady discussing plans with a servant, she kidnaps the Avion princess and goads the other heads of state into following her against the pirates. This turns out to be a huge trap, and the other major Avion Sea powers are deprived of their heads of state as well.
