Paranida is a dangerous sea creature found in the Avion Sea. They are encountered exactly once during Season 2, and while they are not a threat to Japanese or local vessels, they are a serious threats to marine humanoids and scuba divers.

Description

On first contact, Tokushima describes a Paranida as an amoeba-like creature that can create additional slim tentacles with octopus-like suckers from anywhere in its body. It is larger than two meters in diameter, "bigger than a person standing upright"^[1] and is able to partially engulf the Kitashio's sail and bridge. We are told that it is capable of changing color, but its primary color is pink.

Its only mentioned sensorary organs are its two eyes, which also hint at the location of its centralized brain, slightly above the midpoint between the eyeballs. A deep penetrating attack to this area instantly kills the Paranida

Behavior

Paranida typically create dens in the various coral reefs of the Azure, Avion, and Kundoran Seas, where they drag their food back to or lay eggs for their young. Paranida are carnivorous, and hunt other fish, sea creatures, and marine humanoids including Aqua.

Paranidas attack by grabbing their prey with their long tentacles, then engulfing and strangling them to prevent resistance. Next the Paranida injects their prey with a toxin so that they stop feeling pain and lose the ability to struggle. If the humanoid is not eaten, they are taken back to its den where the Paranida lays eggs inside them and cocoons them until the baby creatures hatch, exploding from the belly of the humanoid and eating them alive. Supposedly demihumans, while unable to escape, are left conscious and aware the whole time, making this fate particularly horrific. Even if the humanoid is able to escape cocooning, there is no way available in the Special Region to safely remove the eggs, making capture by a Paranida a death sentence.

Plot

Tokushima encounteres and fights a Paranida while the Kitashio is transiting the North and South Undersea Passages.During the attack the Aqua Yuri is captured and almost taken away, but Tokushima is able to save her by killing the creature.

Trivia

• Paranida reproduction is heavily and explicitly ripped from the Aliens seen in Ridley Scott's horror movie series by the same name.
• Paranida both act and appear similar to a form of hentai monster that Japanese media has become infamous for.
