The Type I vest is worn by JSDF personnel in the special region. The body armor is similar to the american PASGT vest and likely provides similar protection. The Type I vest is lined with soft Kevlar and it likely sits at NIJ II to NIJ IIIA and will provide the wearer protection from pistol rounds and shrapnel.

The Type I Body Armor was used by most JSDF personnel while in the Special Region probably due to lack of firearms and the trend of using outdated equipment. Even though Type I is not stab proof,the soft Kevlar of the type I vest is capable of providing limited protection from arrows, swords and spears.
